2 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ FEBRUARY 2018 JUNIOR ACHIEVERS ■ LOS CAB LOB-STERS BOND ON THE TENNIS COURTS L os Cab Junior Team Ten- nis is riding a high after returning in January from Palm Desert, where the club's 18-and-under team played in the sectional tournament for the third straight year. The Los Cab Lob-sters – whose "punny" name was voted on by the team – competed in the highest competitive division and finished the season with the best record of all 10 teams in Orange County. At sectionals, they enjoyed strong wins over The Liberty Patriots from Bakersfield and The Avengers Boys from Los An- geles before narrow defeats to The Coto Beasts from Orange County and Rancho Penasquitos Tennis Club from San Diego. The junior program last year also featured a 14-and-under team, the Los Cab Lemurs, and has included as many as 25 play- ers participating in matches. Started in 2010 by Michelle Taylor, the junior program has continued to flourish under the direction of Los Cab members Bryan Bullette and Allen You. "This program has had an enormously positive impact upon the kids participating," Bullette said. "Most have played team tennis together for five or more years, and the time spent competing, traveling and social- izing with each other has created a very tight bond that has re- sulted in many of their closest friendships." You added that while kids who play competitive junior ten- nis – like he did – don't get to enjoy the camaraderie of a team atmosphere, the squads at Los Cab practice together regularly and travel to team events with each other, so there's not the same sense of isolation. "The goal has always been fun first," he said. "We wanted to create an environment for these kids to bond. In a lot of cases, they're better friends with their tennis teammates than the kids they go to school with every day." DIVING IN WITH THE NOVA SWIM SCHOOL B onnie Joseph has been running the Nova Swim School since it's inception nearly 20 years ago. The school currently features four lo- cations, one of which is based out of Los Cab. We recently caught up with her to learn more about the program. How did you get involved with Nova Swim School? Los Cab's swim team merged with Nova in 1999 and I was instrumental in that merger. When it was de- cided to have the swim school at Los Cab, I was asked to run it. Can you tell us a little about the program? We teach children 2 months old and up, and we offer adult lessons in a private setting. It is really a good set- up with the swim school right next to the swim team. Students see those swimmers and aspire to be like them. What is something most people would not know about the school? We try to move children from private to group lessons as soon as they are ready. Those up to 3 years old take private lessons, while those older than 3 can take group lessons. The groups are small with a maximum of four chil- dren, so they get lots of attention. What do kids enjoy most? Since the pool is always at 80 degrees, the kids are able to swim year round, which helps them improve quickly. And we are lucky to have the nice club surroundings. There is a snack bar and a TV lounge, so the parents have a nice place to go as well. > VISIT NovaSwimSchool.org.
