FEBRUARY 2018 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ 3 MASTERS DEGREE ■ SWIM GROUP OFFERS AN EXCEPTIONAL WORKOUT E ach Tuesday and Thursday morning, you'll find an enthu- siastic group of adult swim- mers enjoying the Masters Swim Group at Los Cab, even during the winter months when the 7 a.m. start time can bring chilly air temperatures. The free sessions are open to anyone 18 and older, and there's no need to sign up in advance – mem- bers can simply show up any time with their swim- suits and goggles. Diego Pombo, the Mas- ters swim coach at Los Cab, leads the sessions. While the workouts vary from day to day, each one incorporates different distances and strokes while focusing on proper technique, efficiency and conditioning. Partici- pants range from competi- tive triathletes to recrea- tional swimmers and those who are new to swimming and just want the exercise. In a typical session, an experienced swimmer will cover approximately 3,000 yards, while a novice may swim 1,200 yards. "Swimming is a great aerobic exercise that en- gages almost all the muscles in your body, and it is a low-impact sport," Pombo said. "Injuries do not occur as often as with high-impact sports, and people can im- prove their physical condi- tion with two or three swims a week." ........................................... > CALL (714) 546-8560 to learn more about the group. ARE YOU UP TO THE TEST? ......................................... JOIN IN FOR MARCH MADNESS AND POLAR BEAR CHALLENGES T he March Madness Fitness Challenge is back at Los Cab, and the competi- tion is sure to heat up as members aim to participate in 20 hours of classes and ac- tivities to earn the commemorative March Madness T-shirt that's a badge of honor among those who meet the challenge. Fitness Director Marianne Grossman said that the March Madness program comes at a time when New Year's resolutions have often faded. Members track their hours with tally cards that are marked by instructors at the end of each class, and often members try classes that they may not have considered – yoga, Pilates, cycle, Bodypump, Zumba and more. Each week, there are designated classes worth double points, which serves as incentive for members to try something new. "It's a great tool to highlight the diversity of our group fitness program," Grossman said. "Those who have never taken a yoga, Bodypump or Zumba class are willing to try something new to complete their 20 hours." • • • S wimmers who love to get in the pool but might need a little incentive during the cooler months will be happy to hear that the Polar Bear Challenge will return to Los Cab for another year from January 8-March 8. Members are challenged to swim 25 miles or 25 hours and log their activity throughout the two months. Once they hit their goal, they'll receive a commemorative long- sleeved Polar Bear T-shirt. "Although the air temperature can be chilly, the water in the 50-meter pool is about 80 degrees year round," Grossman said. "Both the Polar Bear Challenge and March Madness Fitness Challenge require diligence and dedication from our members – neither of them is easy!" The sessions focus on a variety of distances and strokes.
