July/August 2017 ❘ TEE TIMES ❘ 3 ■ LOUELLA KANEW TAKES WOMEN'S TITLE FOR THE 14TH TIME T he Women's Club Champi- onship at El Caballero Country Club this year fea- tured a commanding perform- ance – along with a compelling and ongoing storyline for the re- cently crowned champion. Louella Kanew captured the club's most coveted trophy for the 14th time on June 13 after firing rounds of 76-85-75 for a 54-hole total of 236 to win the tournament by 26 strokes. Lynn Edelson fin- ished second at 262. And while she still has plenty of work ahead of her to match the 39 club championships won by Helen Knight during the course of six decades, Kanew has clearly estab- lished herself as the player to beat at El Cab. "Long drives and great putting were the keys to Louella's victory," said PGA Head Golf Professional Mark Taylor. "She is an excep- tional player who also has won many other local tournaments." Twenty eight players partici- pated in the Women's Club Cham- pionship, held June 6, 9 and 13. An awards banquet took place June 27. In the net divisions, Alison Dia- mond shot a 186 total to win the 1st Flight, Esther Youtan (218) carded the low score in the 2nd Flight, and Shari Kairey (214) cap- tured the 3rd Flight. ■ JOSH DIAMOND MAKES IT SIX IN A ROW IN DRAMATIC FASHION I f club champions were awarded rings like athletes receive in team sports, Josh Diamond would now need both hands to ac- commodate all his jewelry. The defending champion won El Cab's 2017 Men's Club Champi- onship on June 18, closing out his victory and earning his sixth straight title with a 1-up victory in 19 holes over Michael Turner. Diamond's most recent victory was a thriller. Down four after eight holes, he played the final 10 holes in even par, making a clutch eight-foot birdie putt on the 18th to force extra holes. "Josh never led in the match during regulation play, and went 1 up only after making birdie on the first playoff hole to win the tourna- ment," said Mark Taylor, El Cab's PGA Head Golf Professional. Championship semifinalists in- cluded Geoff Carnivale and Scott Cohen, while Craig Miller, Dan Schindler, CJ Paul and Gary Lev- enstein all made it to the quarters. In the net divisions, David Cohn won the 1st Flight, Alan Mandel- berg won the 2nd Flight, David Cohen was the 3rd Flight winner, and Ben Molnar was the Executive Flight champion. Tom and Karen Rudnai won the Couples gross title, while Andrew and Shari Kairey captured the net crown.
