2 ❘ TEE TIMES ❘ July/August 2017 JOYS OF SUMMER ■ FROM SPECIAL EVENTS TO CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS, EL CAB IS THE PLACE TO BE First, I can't believe the Fourth of July has come and gone already! This holiday is packed with meaning for me. Besides the obvious historical context, and the pa- triotism that is on display, it also means summer is in full swing. And for us at El Cab, it means somehow serving dinner to close to 2,000 members and their families and guests, and enjoying our annual fireworks show. It never ceases to amaze me how smoothly this incredible undertaking goes. It hurts my head to think of all the planning, the logistics, the security issues, the food, the parking, the wristbands, etc. But every year our incredible staff pulls off this event seamlessly and they all deserve our gratitude. Second, I want to take this opportunity to congrat- ulate Josh Diamond on his sixth Club Championship. This year, the champion was determined by match play. The final match was between Josh and Michael Turner. Michael led 1-up going into 18 but Josh birdied the 18th to extend the match, and birdied No. 1 to win in extra holes. It was an incredibly exciting finish; Michael, as always, was all class as runner-up and must be the favorite heading into the Senior Club Championship. As for Josh, well what can I say. If you've ever seen Josh hit a driver you'd think that any- thing flying that far should have a flight attendant on board. He's an amazing player and a worthy cham- pion. Speaking of amazing players, I'd also like to con- gratulate Louella Kanew on winning her 14th Women's Club Championship, an incredible feat; and Karen & Tom Rudnai on winning the Couples Club Champi- onship. Great playing, all! Finally, I know I say this often, but there are a lot of exciting things happening at the club. We just com- pleted the tee levelling project, which was the final phase of our last golf course improvement project. I've asked Joe Gechtman who heads the Greens Committee to look into a few of the greens that have become too severe, and let the Board know if any of them, in spots, need to be addressed. Despite emerging from a lengthy drought, don't ex- pect the DWP to return our water costs to pre-drought levels. Higher costs are here to stay, and we will have to balance costs with conservation as we head into the hottest months. Doug Meadows and his crew will be looking to re-sod areas where needed and keep the course in the best condition possible. The Board is cur- rently well into plans for new dining room chairs, as well as a new entry kiosk. As soon as the details and costs become clear, Phil Lopez and I will be making a presentation to the membership. I think everyone will be happy with the proposed changes. The pool area looks amazing and the service there is fantastic. I hope everyone takes advantage to stay cool during the summer months. Enjoy the golf, the amazing food, and all the club has to offer this sum- mer. Hit 'em straight, – SCOTT COHEN, Club President ● PRESIDENT'S LETTER S eems my President's Letters are getting shorter and less urgent of late. I wonder why that's the case? Oh yeah, how could I forget. GM Phil Lopez has reinstituted Tee Times and has done a great job keeping the membership informed with his monthly updates. Being President of El Cab used to be so exciting. Now I feel like the Maytag Repairman. (Any NexGen members that don't understand the reference, please call me.) But in all serious- ness, we just completed the June Board Meeting and I wanted to give a quick up- date of some highlights and goings on around the club from my perspective…
