DECEMBER 2019 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ 3 MY BEST TIP EVER ............. VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE W e all know how easy it is to get stuck in our fitness routines. No matter what your preferred workout is, we often fall into the trap of doing what's comfortable. But Los Cab Fitness Director Marianne Grossman said she learned pretty early in life that variety is key. She said the best fitness tip she ever received is to cross-train… "Aside from stay- ing consistent, mix- ing things up is without a doubt one of the most impor- tant things you can do. Many of us tend to gravitate toward the things we like to do, and we like to do the things that we're good at. But there are times when we need to step outside the lines and do some- thing different. "Mixing up your fitness routine will help alleviate bore- dom. Incorporating strength training, flexibility, yoga and Pilates, along with a good cardio pro- gram, makes for a well-rounded fitness routine." .................................. > VISIT loscab.com/ trainers to learn more. MEMBER PROFILE .......................... KEYS TO LONGEVITY ■ STAYING ACTIVE IS ESSENTIAL FOR 79-YEAR-OLD GARY LAI L os Cab member Gary Lai worked for many years in financial services and real estate, and in his retirement has taken up traveling and the art of shaping bonsai trees. At 79 years old, he feels as young as ever, crediting his focus on physi- cal fitness for helping him find the fountain of youth. The long-time Huntington Beach resident took a break from his active sched- ule to talk about why it's so important. ◆ ◆ ◆ How long have you been a member at Los Cab and what do you like to do for fitness? I joined along with my wife, Leslie, in 1988, when her tennis club closed. I'm not a tennis player, but switched from another club to Los Cab, and we've been happy here for more than 30 years. ◆ ◆ ◆ What does your normal fitness routine look like? I really like the group classes. I've done them all over the years. I'm at the club four days a week, and my regular classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays. I do a lot of boot camp, Zumba and Bodypump now. Bodypump really helps with weight control – I weigh the same today as I did when I was 28 years old! ◆ ◆ ◆ Why do you place such an emphasis on your fitness? As you get older, one of the big things to be concerned about is falling. I find that especially Zumba classes help with rhythm, balance and lower-body strength. The secret for me is staying active and getting to bed early. It has really be- come a lifestyle for me, and I feel great. Longtime Los Cab member Gary Lai. GROUP FITNESS T he holiday season is no time to for- get about your fitness goals and, fortunately, Los Cab members will have plenty of opportunities to break a good sweat between family gatherings and bountiful feasts. "During this time of year, all of our in- structors really encourage our members to stick to their workout routines," Fit- ness Director Marianne Grossman said. The club will be open 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Christmas Eve for those looking to get a last-minute workout in. Doors will be closed Christmas Day, but the schedule is back to normal on the 26th, minus a cou- ple of early morning classes. New Year's Eve will also feature an 8 a.m.-2 p.m. schedule, and the club will be open nor- mal hours on New Year's Day for those looking to jump-start their resolutions. ................................................................... > VISIT loscab.com/group-fitness.
