2 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ AUGUST 2019 ● ON THE COURTS THE HEAT IS ON! ■ LOS CAB ONCE AGAIN PLAYS HOST TO SCTA ADULT SECTIONALS L os Cab was the center of the Southern California adult tennis universe on the last weekend in July and will continue to be the place to be the first weekend in August. From July 26-28, the club served as one of four Orange County locations to host the SCTA's Adult 18 and over Sec- tional Championships, with 414 players from across the region making up 57 teams competing in men's and women's divisions at the 3.0, 4.0 ad 5.0+ levels. The event is set to continue August 2- 4 with competition for men and women at the 3.5 and 4.5 levels, featuring 52 teams and totaling 408 players. Among those competing on the first weekend was former pro baseball player and In- land Empire native Bobby Kielty. While play is spread across four clubs, Los Cab serves as the main site for semifinals and finals, and hosts ap- proximately 200 players each weekend. "So far, the event has been a huge success," said Mary Gastro of the USTA's Southern California section. "Our adult league players always look forward to the biggest league sectional event at the lovely Los Cab Sports Vil- lage every summer." REMEMBERING TOM GILBERT T om Gilbert's influence on the local handball com- munity won't soon be forgotten and each year since his pass- ing in 2015 Los Cab has hosted an event in his memory, giving handball players a way to come together and honor his work and legacy. More than 100 participants are expected for this year's tournament, scheduled for Saturday, September 14. "Los Cab has been very generous in providing us the facility at a very reasonable cost, and that speaks highly of the impact Tom had here," said event organizer Gary Cruz. "It's a lot of work to or- ganize, but it's a labor of love and it's a great way to memo- rialize a guy who meant so much to so many people, myself included." Competitors can register through September 13 by contacting Cruz at gcruz@ ushandball.org or calling (949) 633-2422. Each entry costs $25, which includes a com- memorative T-shirt.
