NOVEMBER 2018 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ 3 ROARING GOOD TIMES! ■ TENNIS CALCUTTA, '20s-THEMED PARTY WAS ONE FOR THE AGES I f the atmosphere around Los Cab Sports Village seemed a little more spirited than usual in late October, it could only mean one thing – the club's annual Tennis Calcutta and pair- ings party had arrived. The once-a-year celebration kicked off on October 19 and featured a lively Friday night party to kick off the fes- tivities, followed by two days of com- petitive tennis action. Los Cab Events Coordinator Thao Le estimated that 300 members attended the pairings party, which featured a Roaring '20s theme that had attendees dressing to the nines like characters right out of The Great Gatsby. Dinner was catered by Pasta Connection, a local favorite that has served Argen- tine and Italian dishes in Costa Mesa for more than 30 years and is owned by club member Yadira Hernandez. "It was different this year compared to last because we had a very specific theme," Le said. "I think a lot of mem- bers had fun with that." There were also casino games, and members used their winnings to buy into a raffle that included great prizes such as a 32GB gold iPad with an Apple pen, a Monster portable speaker, a Nintendo Switch game console and more. A caricature artist and photo booth added to the fun atmosphere. The Tennis Calcutta competition was highly exciting as well, with championship matches in both divi- sions being very close. Held October 20-21, the tournament drew 136 players, and for the second straight year included a junior division as well as the adult division. Team Yellow, captained by Nick Doan with Armida Gruber serving as Team Mom, emerged victorious in the adult division by a score of 49-45 over Team Green, which was led by Cap- tain Mark Murphy and Team Dad Chad Summers. In the Junior Division, Team Indigo was captained by Justin Nguyen and won by a score of 61-59. Team Bur- gundy, led by Jojo Latham, captured finalist honors.
