2 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ NOVEMBER 2018 ● ON THE COURTS NATIONAL PRIDE ■ LOS CAB TEAM PLACES SECOND IN WOMEN'S 5.0+ CHAMPIONSHIP A side from how well they played, perhaps the best part of competing in the USTA League National Championships for a team represent- ing Los Cab was the camaraderie. A group of eight players from Los Cab and other local clubs was cap- tained by member Tracy Harris and finished second in the adult 18-and- over 5.0+ women's division after falling in the championship match to a younger squad from Texas. The group enjoyed traveling to the USTA's National Campus in Orlando to compete in the October 5-7 tourna- ment – and had just as much fun off the court as on it. "We were all really pleased with the results," Harris said. "We played some great tennis, and we all felt for- tunate that we didn't come up against the young team from Texas until the championship match." In the end, though, it was the bond- ing that made the trip memorable. "We all stayed in an Airbnb rental, and had some great times hanging out with each other as well as giving it our best shot on the courts," Harris said. TURKEY DOO DAH COMING NOVEMBER 18 B efore you fill your plate on America's favorite feasting holiday, why not work up a sweat at Los Cab's 19th Annual Turkey Doo Dah? The popular tennis event is set for Sunday, November 18 – just four days before Thanks- giving – and is always a fun and festive way to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with fellow members. Players of all levels are di- vided into five-member teams, and the event is typi- cally more social than compet- itive. However, there's more than pride on the line as each member of the winning team goes home with a turkey. Ap- proximately 125 players are expected to participate. "Because the format allows for players of different skill levels to be part of the same team, a lot of members really enjoy getting to play with their family," said Events Co- ordinator Thao Le. "That makes it a lot of fun." .............................................. > CALL (714) 546-2900 or visit the tennis desk by November 15 to sign up. DOUBLES ACTION ..................... FINDING THE RIGHT MIX A 7.0 team of 40- and-over mixed doubles players will be representing Los Cab at the USTA League Nationals in Orlando on November 16-18 after winning the Southern California sectionals last month in Santa Barbara. Johnny Cheng, a co- captain on the team and a member at Los Cab for nearly four years, said it's an exciting time for the players and the club. "I think for most of the players this will be their first time going to nation- als," Cheng said. Making it to nationals is a pretty big deal – ap- proximately 900,000 players nationwide com- pete in USTA League play, with only about 6,000 advancing to the 14 national championship tournaments. SERVING UP A FEAST OF FUN AND GAMES Players who made the trip to Nationals were Karen Haas, Ellie Hammargren, Tracy Harris, Quynh Le, Jennifer Lyons, Debbie Spence Nasim, Dominika Olszewska and Amanda Parson- Siegel. Members not pictured are Denise Beaufort, Jackie Heston, Natalie Hill Krista O'Conner and Tai Sisson.
