2 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ OCTOBER 2018 ● ON THE COURTS BRIGHT FUTURES ....................... RISING STARS SHINE AT USTA EVENT F or the 18th straight year, the action on the courts brought fans to their feet when the $15,000 Los Cab USTA Men's Pro Futures tennis tournament took place September 21st-30th. The singles title went to Takuto Niki, the fourth seed and a native of Japan, who outlasted un- seeded American Michael Shabaz, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Shabaz had needed to win three matches in the 128-player qualifying bracket just to make the main draw, but played exceptionally well to reach the final before falling to his counterpart. "I haven't won in six months, so I really wanted to win this tour- nament," said Niki, who captured his 10th Futures title. "I had to fight my opponent with every- thing I had." Unseeded Alexander Cozbinov of Moldova and Maxime Cressy of France claimed the dou- bles title, toppling third- seeded Americans Alec Adamson and Conor Berg, 6-2, 6-2, in the final.
