A
nother front in the battle against
diabetes, one of the most common
illnesses in the United States,
emerged in May as the Scripps Health
Woltman Family Diabetes Care and Pre-
vention Center opened. Political and busi-
ness leaders in North San Diego County
joined Scripps Health officials in the rib-
bon-cutting ceremony, the symbolic open-
ing of a center that houses education and
research efforts targeted at those with Type
1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as others at
risk of developing the disease.
Along with being an important research
and education center combatting a disease
that afflicts some 4 million Californians,
and which 46 percent of the state's resi-
dents have a high risk of developing, the
Woltman Center employs a dozen nurses
and staff members who work in an expan-
sive education classroom, two outpatient
consultation rooms, and office space
spread across the first and fourth floors.
The center was made possible by a
$700,000 grant from San Diego philanthro-
pist Richard Woltman. It is located in
Chula Vista, but will service patients
across San Diego County.
"We are grateful to the Woltman family
for making this new center possible,"
said Dr. Athena Philis-Tsimikas, MD, vice
president for the Scripps Whittier Diabetes
Institute. "The services and programs that
we offer from this space serve hundreds of
South County patients and are a valuable
asset to a population that faces higher risks
developing diabetes and prediabetes."
