l RECREATION NORTH COUNTY BUSINESS JOURNAL x SPRING 2016 x sdnedc.org on many levels. In addition to the production side, golf contributes even more to the over- all economy of North County by way of its many golf courses (private and public), and golf retail shops. It is also home to world-class golf resorts. Two in particular stand out – the Park Hyatt Aviara Golf Club (host site for the LPGA Kia Classic) and the historic Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, which has held more than its fair share of top PGA Tour events over the years. Both of these resorts put North San Diego County in a world view and help drive vacationers and vital tourism dol- lars to the county. Certainly not to be overlooked are the contributions and impact of North County's public golf facilities, both coastal and inland. Courses such as The Crossings at Carlsbad, Arrowood Golf Club, Encini- tas Ranch, The Golf Club of California at Fallbrook, Twin Oaks and Rancho Bernardo Inn, among many others, all boast spectacular views and scenery as well as challenging yet fun layouts for locals and visitors. Another important component of the golf economy is retail stores. "Golf retail is heavily influenced by the club manufacturers being in our back yard," said Susan Roll, one of the owners of The Carlsbad Golf Center, lo- cated off Highway 78. "Virtually every- one around here knows someone who works at one of those companies, which creates more enthusiasm for the game perhaps than other parts of the country. "We see golf on its way back up for sure. Companies like TaylorMade and Cobra have initiatives to get more kids playing golf and that's good for every- one." In addition to The Carlsbad Golf Cen- ter, off-course retailers such as Dick's Sporting Goods and The Golf Mart have multiple locations in North County. With so many golf-related businesses in North County, it is clearly the center of the golf universe, which helps the sport play a vital role in the health and growth of the area's economy. From clubs to courses to golf retail, there is much at stake to keep the game of golf growing, and achieve the growth seen from the mid-1990s to the mid- 2000s. Much of North County's infrastruc- ture and economic boon can be directly tied back to the golf industry. The future appears to look good for golf, and the residents and affiliated businesses in North County only stand to benefit from it.
