T
hough cell phones are
ubiquitous and we use
them for everything
from paying bills to making
reservations, many travelers
still rely heavily on printed
brochures while traveling.
That was the information
found in responses to a survey
question posted in August
2014 on Yahoo! Travel, one of
the most trafficked travel
booking sites on the Internet.
The question was: "Does
anyone still use those print
brochures you find in hotels
now that we have smart
phones?" The post received
595 likes and 200 comments,
with 95 percent of respondents
generating positive feedback.
While many respondents
merely typed yes, some com-
menters provided more in-
depth answers, such as Sherise
Mckinzie, who wrote, "Yes. I
love to look at them in my
room while I unwind. Bro-
chures and coffee for about 30
minutes helps the whole trip."
Other commenters said
brochures are far more reliable
than spotty Internet service,
particularly when traveling
overseas or in remote areas,
and that the plethora of
coupons that can easily be
clipped out save a great deal
of money on attractions.
Those in the hospitality in-
dustry, such as Elaine Pichay,
also were quick to point out
the value of the printed piece.
"As a travel agent, it is nice
to have [brochures] available
for my clients," Pichay wrote.
"There are times being online
is not feasible. May they never
go away!"
Sweetz Jones echoed those
comments: "I work at a hotel
and they are easier to just pick
up and go instead of trying to
find the exact location of some-
where or something to do."
Commenters also said
brochures can serve as visual
reminders of a trip, as Logan
Byrne did: "You can't stick a
smartphone in a scrapbook for
the memories of places you
visited or things you did."

READERS RESPOND
WHY PRINT
WINS OUT
S
urprisingly, in a digi-
tal age where print
often seems about as rel-
evant as cassette tapes
and VCRs, several respon-
dents to Yahoo! Travel's
survey mentioned that
actually holding printed
material in their hands
remains essential.
One responder, Earline
New Gualdoni, said "I
love my smartphone,
but having it on paper in
your hand is a must."
Many respondents
said the quality of the
maps in brochures were
far better than their tele-
phone screens, and that
they preferred holding
print in their hands
rather than an electronic
device due to the supe-
rior graphics and profes-
sionally designed
templates.
