National Travel and Tourism Week — sponsored by the U.S. Travel Association May 3-11 — is designed to keep those numbers growing. The annual event unites in- dustry professionals from more than 140 destinations coast to coast, from conven- tion and visitor bureaus to hotels, attractions and trans- portation companies. This year's theme is Travel Effect, a research-driven ini- tiative designed to motivate the workforce to use more of their earned time off. Activities include special local events and promotional campaigns to spotlight the in- dustry's economic impact. The event also provides a platform to educate and em- phasize to legislative repre- sentatives just how important travel-related businesses are to the local economy. "Tourism is the No. 1 ex- port for our country," says John Severini, President and CEO of the California Travel Association. "It drives our economy and tourism im- pacts so many jobs; the money spent pumps money into local communities and benefits every person, even if they're not in the industry." Lobbying efforts have led to many bills, including the Travel Promotion Act of 2009 signed by President Obama. The legislation led to Brand USA, a public-private part- nership created by Congress to promote travel to the United States. Brand USA's $150-million-a-year campaign is partially funded by incom- ing tourist visa fees. No tax- payer dollars are used. "Travel is the lifeblood of the economy, jobs, and in- come," Severini says. "Na- tional Travel and Tourism Week is designed to make the public more aware of its impact." ready for takeoff!
