SEPTEMBER 2019 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ 3 W e've all been there. You get up every morning and go to the gym, as consis- tent as clockwork. And while your workout routine may be helping you achieve your results, you've hit a plateau and can't seem to run longer, lift harder or master new moves in the yoga or Pilates studio. Increasing your stamina isn't easy, but there are certain things you can do to reach new goals. We talked with Fitness Director Marianne Grossman about some of the best ways to do just that. ◆ ◆ ◆ GO THE EXTRA MILE One great way to add stamina is to do just a little more than your normal routine. That might mean burning past 30 minutes on the el- liptical machine to do 33 minutes, or it could involve pushing yourself to add an extra set or reps in the weight room. Going beyond your comfort zone will add to your foun- dation, and before you know it, that 33-minute elliptical workout will feel routine. "I had a gentlemen in Club Silver who was doing 15 minutes on the treadmill most days. Over time, he worked his way up to 45 minutes or an hour," Grossman said. "Increas- ing your workload little by little is a really good approach." ◆ ◆ ◆ MAKE SURE TO CROSS TRAIN Weight and flexibility training are important for those who spend the majority of their time on cardiovas- cular exercise, and vice versa. For a runner, for instance, strengthening your upper body and core can help improve your stamina and keep you going when fatigue sets in your legs. "You have to look at the whole picture," Grossman said. "People overdo it by focusing on one activ- ity, and they set themselves up for injury. A lot of our instructors here are frequently seen taking other peoples' classes because they know it's good for them and will make them better when they return to their normal workout." ◆ ◆ ◆ TRAIN YOUR BRAIN "Being able to work through fa- tigue and keep on going is its own kind of endurance," Grossman said. Convincing yourself to push through barriers isn't easy, and stay- ing the course by steadily increasing your output over the course of weeks and months can be harder than it seems. "You just don't stop," Grossman said. "You just have to keep going and stay consistent with your progress." TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL 3 WAYS TO BUILD YOUR STAMINA ■ IF YOU'VE HIT A WALL WITH YOUR WORKOUTS, HERE ARE SOME STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO INCREASE YOUR ENDURANCE
