l IN THE NEWS NORTH COUNTY BUSINESS JOURNAL x FALL 2017 x sdnedc.org W e may live in the Digital Age, but without the manu- facturing industry, who would make the digital products? Without manufacturing, there wouldn't be a Digital Age. The present and future of manufac- turing, along with the industry's strong presence in the area, was the focus of the North County Manufac- turing Resource Fair, which took place on Oct. 4 at Mira- Costa College's Technology Career Institute, in Carls- bad. Students, teachers and business professionals in manufacturing came together to share what the industry is all about and how it's evolving. The event included networking, some 30 booths hosted by local firms and an open house of TCI, which offers classes in welding, CNC operations, electronic assembly and much more. "Our programs and certificates of ac- complishment are especially effective, since they were established in collabo- ration with professionals in the indus- try who know what needs to be learned," said Linda Kurokawa, Mira- Costa College's director of community education and workforce development. Last year MiraCosta College received a $6 million grant as part of the U.S. Department of Labor's America's Promise program, developed to train people from underserved populations at no cost in high-skilled jobs that are in demand. The event was part of MFG Day, pro- duced by the National Association of Manufacturers and composed of gath- erings throughout the country that dis- seminate information about the industry, address the skilled labor shortage and inform young workers. – LARRY URISH MiraCosta College.
