ocal businesspeople
heading to Las Vegas
no longer have to fight
traffic to San Diego, thanks
to a new airline service op-
erating out of McClellan-
Palomar Airport.
Last month, Cal Jet by
Elite Airways began regu-
larly scheduled flights to
Vegas from Palomar, lo-
cated just three miles from
Carlsbad.
The service
offers a signifi-
cant advantage
for local busi-
nesses, which
will ultimately translate to a
stronger local economy,
says Palomar Airport Advi-
sory Committee member
John O'Reilly. "This service
makes North County more
desirable for local compa-
nies," he said. "And it will
attract more business. You
can connect to a lot of
places from Las Vegas.
"Since Palomar Airport is
small, you have shorter se-
curity lines and a faster
check-in," O'Reilly added.
"And the parking is $5 or
$6 a day."
According to O'Reilly,
Cal Jet CEO Robert Daly
predicted that by Thanks-
giving, Cal Jet (which con-
tracts with Elite Airways)
will be operating from
Palomar Airport to Oak-
land, Phoenix and Cabo
San Lucas. "Oakland is at-
tractive to North County
tech executives, given its
proximity to the Bay Area
and Silicon Valley."
Daily flights aboard the
airline's Bombardier
CRJ700 luxury jets, which
start at $69 each way, are
scheduled for 9 a.m. and
12:45 p.m. out of Palomar,
and 11 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.
from Las Vegas.

County received pub-
lished proof recently as
U.S. News and World
Report ranked several
Scripps Health facilities
as the best in the re-
gion, and among the
best in the country.
The accolades came
in August in the maga-
zine's annual report on
the best hospitals in
the country. Scripps
Green Hospital and
Scripps Memorial Hos-
pital La Jolla made the
list.
"Ranking No. 1 in
San Diego and among
the best in the nation is
the result of the hard
work of our physicians,
nurses and staff who
focus every day on al-
ways getting better,"
said Chris Van Gorder,
president and CEO of
Scripps Health.
