NORTH COUNTY BUSINESS JOURNAL x SUMMER 2017 x sdnedc.org I magine what life would be like in the imaginary world known as Worker Utopia. For one thing, companies would pro- vide free, comprehensive exercise programs for their employees. Furthermore, to take the long view, these programs would eventually pay for themselves. It turns out that this Shangri- La scenario already exists in North County, thanks to the top- notch programs offered by Tri- City Wellness Center in Carlsbad. Those who exercise regularly are more productive and happier employees, according to numer- ous studies. Research by the Mayo Clinic, for example, demonstrates that exercise im- proves mood, boosts energy, re- duces depression and combats diseases, among other benefits. Conversely, it doesn't take a CPA to know that sick, depressed, ex- hausted staffers can be, to put it bluntly, money vacuums. "A corporate membership pro- gram is a significant employee benefit," says Jeremy Fritz, oper- ations manager and membership director of Tri-City Wellness. "It's critical to your company's bottom line and the overall health and productivity of your team. Having a healthier work- force can positively impact your company's healthcare costs, too. When your employees are en- gaged in a fitness program, they set and achieve goals, have re- duced absenteeism, and inspire others to be healthier in the workplace." Tri-City Wellness Center pro- vides a weightlifting area and a variety of ways to get the ol' ticker pumping: treadmills, ellip- tical machines, stair climbers, row machines, and upright and recumbent bikes. Guests can knock out laps in a 25-meter pool or get moving on HydroWorx, a state-of-the-art underwater treadmill. The center hosts more than 130 group fitness classes per week that help get employ- ees out from behind their desks and working out to- gether. Some of their most popular group classes include Body- Pump, Pilates Mat, BodyFlow, Vinyasa Yoga and Gentle Yoga, AquaFit, Barre, and SPRINT! – a high-intensity interval training cycling class. "We also offer a tranquil Mind- Body studio for our yoga and mat Pilates classes," Fritz says, "as well as a dedicated cycling studio, a Pilates studio for indi- vidual and semi-private lessons, and a larger group fitness studio where we hold classes like Tai- Chi, BodyPump and Zumba." If getting away from the office during crunch time (deadlines, not sit-ups) is not feasible, the professionals at Tri-City can bring their equipment to offsite group workouts. In addition, they're available to customize a workout or fitness class to meet the needs of any group of em- ployees. And those who want to maximize their time and effort can work out one-on-one with a degree-certified personal trainer. Group personal training sessions are also available. It's no surprise that the center attracts com- panies that are headed by savvy, forward-think- ing employers who under- stand that a happy, healthy team is a productive one. "We work with a variety of companies," Fritz says. Two of the growing number of North County firms that work with Tri-City include Carlsbad- headquartered ViaSat and Lusardi Construction in San Marcos. ..................................................... ›› CLICK HERE to learn more.
