5 WAYS TO EXPERIENCE NORTH COUNTY OFF THE BEATEN PATH
1
GO EXPLORING IN AN
UNDERWATER GRAVEYARD
For the curious scuba divers, the ocean floor
off the coast of San Diego contains secrets to
the area's past. About 100 yards straight out
from the La Jolla Cove Bridge Club, and about
35 feet deep, scuba divers will find an entire
group of underwater tombstones, with names
and dates still visible. There are no actual bodies
there though, lest that scare you away. Instead, a
group of divers in the 1940s that frequented the
area used the ocean floor to mark when one of
the members of their group had died. When a
diver died, the other members of the group
would create a tombstone and go plant it on the
ocean floor. Today, local free-divers dive down
about once a month to go clean off the marine
growth that, left to its own devices, would ob-
scure and erode the names and dates listed on
the stones.
