T
he inaugural North
County Water Summit
in July didn't produce
any rain clouds or dump pre-
cious water on the region. And
California's drought remains a
grave concern for residents and
businesses in the state.
However, the summit was an over-
whelming success in that, for the first
time, local water districts and business
interests worked together
to educate participants
about the reality of the
water crisis, and to call for
new, innovative ideas to
help conserve water.
More than 250 guests
from businesses and or-
ganizations from across
North San Diego County
met at the summit, which
was presented by two local water dis-
tricts and hosted by the San Diego
North Economic Development Corpo-
ration at the City of Vista Civic Center.
Maureen Stapleton, general manager
of the San Diego County Water Author-
ity, presented the big picture.
"The Water Authority and its 24-
member agencies have diversified the
region's water supply portfolio so that
it is no longer reliant on a single sup-
plier for most of the region's water,"
Stapleton said. "Through a combina-
tion of conservation programs and
transfers, and the development of a de-
salination plant in Carlsbad, the Au-
thority has enough water to meet 99
percent of regional demand this year."
San Diego's relative stability doesn't
mean that the city's agencies aren't part
of Governor Brown's mandatory cut-
backs, Stapleton said. Even regions that
are virtually self-sufficient must cut
back water to help the state as a whole.
