l COMMUNITIES NORTH COUNTY BUSINESS JOURNAL x FALL 2015 x sdnedc.org served by the same fire department and town council. "The only commerce we have is the nurseries," Barker said. "Historically, there was a dairy and some large chicken ranches in Harmony Grove." The term "elfin forest" is used to de- scribe the small plants that once thrived throughout Southern California. These in- clude chaparral, coastal scrub, bush-for- est, and elfin-wood. The habitat supports many endangered plants and animals, in- cluding the gnatcatcher. According to the fire department's website, Elfin Forest and Harmony Grove encompass approximately 11 square miles. The fire department serves a com- bined population of more than 2,000 resi- dents. HIDDEN MEADOWS North of Escondido, in the foothills of the Palomar Mountain range, lies the quiet community of Hidden Meadows. The area is located on a mesa above the Lawrence Welk Resort. According to the community website, a 1500-to-1700-foot elevation makes Hidden Meadows cooler than many neighboring areas. The alti- tude brings year-round ocean breezes. Most homes are built on large lots and there's plenty of wildlife. There are about 3,500 residents. According to San Diego County, the community covers over 10,000 acres. Local lore says the area was home to a Mexican bandit in the late 1700s. Tania Orlova, a real estate agent who serves on the Associated Residents of Hidden Meadows/Rimrock board, de- scribes the community as "very peace- ful." "It's a diversified population," she said. "There are old and young and middle- aged people." The residents' group stages a variety of events throughout the year, she noted. Unincorporated areas offer unique experiences such as the Toys for Tots event in Hidden Meadows. fi PHOTO COURTESY OF THE MEADOWLARK, ROSE SERFAS At MiraCosta College, our students are inspired to dream more, learn more, do more, become more.
