NOVEMBER 2019 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ 3 MEMBER PROFILE .......................... THE JOY OF FITNESS ■ GROUP CLASSES HELP JOEY NAKAGAWA STAY IN TOP SHAPE A bout 18 years ago, Joey Nakagawa had what you might call a "fitness epiphany." He was in his early 40s and loved to run, but with a career as a support manager for AT&T that demanded a lot of his attention, he didn't have time or energy for much else. At the suggestion of his family, he joined Los Cab in 2001 and developed a newfound passion for fitness. Now 61, Nakagawa is a daily presence at the club. We recently caught up with him between workouts to learn more about why Los Cab is such a big part of his life. ◆ ◆ ◆ What inspired you to become a Los Cab member? I had always exercised out- doors – mostly running – and had never be- longed to a club, but my wife and daughter were members at Los Cab. My wife sug- gested that I join, and after riding the sta- tionary bike on my first day at the club, I could barely walk. That brought me to the realization that I needed to work out more and participate in different types of exer- cises. It was an eye-opening experience. ◆ ◆ ◆ How did your workout plan change after that? I started on a pretty easy schedule, working out on my own Monday, Wednesday and Friday. But then I tried some of the group classes, and that really changed things for me. What's special about Los Cab is not only the classes they offer, but the amazing instructors. ◆ ◆ ◆ What got you interested in Los Cab's group classes? My daughter, who's now in her 30s, talked me into doing Body- pump, which was my first class. Now I go five days a week, and every day I take a different class. ◆ ◆ ◆ What does a normal week look like for you at Los Cab? On Mondays, I do yoga, a weight workout and a run. Tues- days is CXWORX and bootcamp. Wednes- day is Bodypump, running and weights. Thursday is HIIT class, and that's all I do that day because it kills me – it's only half an hour, but it's really tough. On Friday, I run and do Bodypump, and then I take the weekends off to rest and recover. ◆ ◆ ◆ What motivates you to work out so regularly? When you work out on your own, you tend to do things that you're good at and you like. But in a group class setting, you push yourself more, and the in- structors are there to motivate you. You just do what they say – and they're very good at keeping you interested. ◆ ◆ ◆ What do you like most about Los Cab? Since I have been retired, it's really become my social hub. I have met a lot of great people. There are also a lot of people who are older and inspire me. I think to myself that if they can do what they're doing at their age, then I need to keep up! ENJOY YOUR WORKOUT I n the world of fit- ness, there often seems to be endless amounts of quick fixes advertised on- line and on TV. A better route to take may be to consult a personal trainer, so we asked Head Fitness Trainer Peggy Pocher for the best fitness tip she has ever re- ceived. Here's what she had to say… "Find an activity or exercise format that you really like or even love. It will motivate you to get in the gym and enjoy your workouts and look forward to them. If you get bored, look for a new activity or exer- cise. Not only will this keep you active physically, but learn- ing new types of movement is good for your brain, too. If you don't enjoy your workout, you aren't going to stick to it and you won't stay focused on it. It's important not to just go through the motions. Get your brain in the game and keep your workout fresh and enjoyable." .................................. > VISIT loscab.com/ trainers to learn more.
