Sharon Cummings joined in July T he WGA wrapped up the Sea Country Classic "Golfing Safari" and the reviews couldn't have been better for the member-guest event held July 28-30 at El Niguel Country Club. They read like a movie poster: "Best tournament I've ever been to!" "So proud of our Club!" "Amazing food, unbelievable menus!" "A great deal of thought and imagina- tion went into planning!" The script began on July 28 with a fun, five-hole par-3 contest that saw Terri Donahue and Gayle Verst win the Gross and Net Championship on the front 9, while Maureen Hadley and Lara Giddings captured Gross and Net on the back 9. The evening's highlight featured a hole-in-one by Leslie Earley on her first swing of the night. In tournament action, Wendy Ohlmeyer and Whitney French fired an 8-under-par 136 to capture the Overall Gross title as well as top honors in the Lion Gross flight. Nancy Watson and Susie McCollom won the Lion Net title. In addition to winning the Giraffe Gross title, Terri Donahue and her partner Michelle Warner captured the Overall Net title by dominating the first day of competition and continuing their great play in the Eclectic format to post a two-day total of 124, defeating the team of Maryly LeVeque and Carolyn Corra- dini by three shots. Maryly and Carolyn took Net honors in the Giraffe flight. Other winners in the tournament in- cluded Kathy Karahallos and Joanne Kootsikas, who won Gross in the Tiger Flight, and Denise Wintrode and Sheila Hubbard, who won Net. The Zebra Flight was won by Sandy Sullivan and Donna Someku on the Gross side and Leslie Earley and Gayle Verst on the Net side. Congratulations to all the winners and to Ruthie Sheffield and her com- mittee for an outstanding job chairing the event.
