■ PICKLEBALL'S POPULARITY SOARS
WITH OPENING OF GK ACADEMY
I
t's got a funny-sounding name and as
passionate a following as nearly any
other sport – and pickleball is here to stay
at Los Cab Sports Village.
The GK Pickleball Academy opened at the
club in early May, with dedicated outdoor
and indoor courts that have so far gotten
plenty of use. And the game is surging in
popularity at Los Cab and beyond.
"We try to encourage everyone at the club
to play – from people in the gym to tennis
and racquetball players to swimmers," said
Ronnie Nemchock, who founded the acad-
emy alongside Greg and Kathy Johnson.
"Anybody can play this game, and we want
people to come out and try it."
Pickleball is often described as a cross be-
tween tennis and ping pong. There is no
over-hand serving, and because the court is
significantly smaller than in tennis, it's a
faster-moving game that puts less stress on
knees and other joints.
"It started with seniors, but pickleball has
really taken off with so many other people,"
Nemchock said. "Everybody is playing. It's a
lot easier on your body, and it's one of the
most addicting sports out there."
The academy offers instruction and play
for juniors and adults. There is open play
Monday night that includes dinner and
drinks, drop-in play Tuesday mornings,
Wednesday mornings and nights and Friday
mornings. On weekends, the courts are open
from 1-4 p.m. Additionally, Greg Johnson of-
fers beginner clinics Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m.
