MAY 2019 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ 3 SCTA JUNIORS ..................... FUTURE STARS WILL SHINE AT LOS CAB S ome of the region's top young tennis play- ers will return to Los Cab this summer as the 117th annual Southern Cali- fornia Tennis Association Junior Sectionals will be held at the club June 15-17 and June 19-23. An SCTA Level 1 event as well as a USTA Level 3 event, the Junior Sectionals have been held at Los Cab for nearly four decades. There are divisions for boys and girls singles players 10U to 18U as well as boys and girls 18U doubles. About a thou- sand players are expected to compete and they come to Fountain Valley from all over the region, as it is considered the SCTA's biggest junior tournament of the year. Play- ers who have competed in the event and gone on to be- come household names in- clude Tracy Austin, Lindsay Davenport, Sam Querrey, Steve Johnson, Pete Sampras and Michael Chang. "The quality of tennis is al- ways very high," said Tracy Harris of the tennis desk. "We have a lot of members who come to watch the matches toward the end of the tournament as players battle for championship titles in their divisions." ................................................. > VISIT tennislink.usta.com/ tournaments to learn more. I t's a well-established tenet that cross-training can be a big help to athletes. And for tennis players at Los Cab, there are plenty of other physical ac- tivities they can engage in at the club to improve per- formance on the courts. "TRX is a great way to work on the same types of movements that you're doing on the ten- nis court," said Head Fitness Trainer Peggy Pocher. "You get a lot of the rotational movements and the core strength and sta- bility that are important in the sport. It's the same with CXWORX, and I'm a big proponent of Pilates, so I think try- ing that could be very helpful." Pocher said Bodypump is also useful for building strength and endurance in tennis players. HIIT and EDGE classes are great for cardio and agility. "Any of those activities will help develop and maintain the flexibility, strength and en- durance that you need for tennis," Pocher said. "You need to do a variety of different ex- ercises to help avoid overuse injuries. Also, our bodies get used to doing the same thing over and over, so if you're only doing one type of workout, you're going to hit a ceiling as far as the effectiveness of the activity." Tracy Harris, who works at the tennis desk, agreed on the importance of doing something other than playing matches and hitting balls endlessly. "Whether you work out in the gym doing cardio or weights, or you take the classes we offer, all of those things can help," she said. .................................................................................. > VISIT loscab.com/group-fitness.
