4 ❘ LOS CAB LIFE ❘ MARCH 2019 ● FOCUS ON FITNESS C hoosing Pilates as a workout may seem intimidating to those who have never tried it, but the discipline is truly a fit for everyone — no matter your age, gender or level of physical fitness. "Everybody moves at their own pace, and the instructors are trained to mod- ify movements to suit anyone," said Los Cab Head Fitness Instructor Peggy Pocher. "It's a non-threatening atmos- phere; everybody is in their own zone." Pocher says Pilates has six core prin- ciples, which align with the benefits it provides: concentration, centering, pre- cision, control, flow and breathing. "It's a mind-body discipline," Pocher said. "The breathing goes hand in hand with the movement, and that's where the precision comes in." Los Cab offers free mat classes week- day mornings and afternoons as well as Saturday mornings, and the classes are so well-attended that people set up their mats in advance to reserve space. Pilates reformer classes are fee-based and are held mornings, evenings and Saturdays. With upcoming changes in store for the studio arrangement, Pocher hopes to be able to accommodate even more people. Pocher said the benefits of regular Pilates work can be seen in many areas outside the studio. "Because it demands a lot of focus and everyone sort of gets inside their own body, you become much more body aware," she said. "You're more aware of your posture and how you carry yourself. And in other sports and physical activities, you're more aware of your body and movements overall." She said many of her classes feature a diversified turnout. "I think many attendees have discov- ered that Pilates lengthens and strength- ens you," she said. "It's also great for people rehabilitating from joint replace- ments or other surgeries." ....................................................................... > VISIT loscab.com/yoga-pilates.
