ON THE COURTS
W
inter storms held
off just long enough
on the weekend of
February 16-17 for approxi-
mately 100 tennis members to
make a big splash in Los Cab's
highly-anticipated Singles and
Mixed Doubles Championships.
"It's an event that a lot of
our players really look forward
to year after year," said Tracy
Harris, who works at the Tennis
Desk and also was part of the
winning 5.0 mixed doubles
team.
Thirteen singles champions
were crowned, along with nine
squads of mixed doubles win-
ners. Male players competed in
levels 3.5 to 6.0 as well as in age
brackets for those in their 50s,
60s and 70s.
In women's play, there were
singles competitions for levels
3.0 to 4.5 and a 50s field. Mixed
doubles play was contested at
levels 3.0 to 5.0 and an open di-
vision for the club's top players,
as well as age-group brackets
for 50s to 70s.
Winners took home jackets
with the Los Cab logo that iden-
tify them as club champions,
plus guest privileges through
February 28, 2020, and free ball
machine use through August 31,
2019. Runners-up were awarded
logoed vests, guest access
through August 31 and ball ma-
chine usage through May 31.
"I would say it was pretty
competitive," Harris said,
adding that many players enter
the tournament year after year.
"Our Doo Dahs and some of our
mixers are more social events,
but for the club championships,
people come to win."
