■ SCTA ADULT SECTIONALS BRING
SPIRITED COMPETITION TO LOS CAB
T
he tennis courts at Los Cab Sports Village
played host to the SCTA Adult Sectionals from
August 10-12, and by all accounts the tourna-
ment was the equivalent of an overhead smash winner.
Thirty-six teams participated, totaling 288 players
coming from all over Southern California, and among
those was professional soccer legend Landon Donovan
and actor Shawn Hatosy. Men's winners, from level 5.0
to 3.5, respectively, included Dream Killers – LNRD
(captained by Burton Gonzell), Body Shots (Jeff Deng),
OC LPC Irvine (Frank Carlos) and Underdogs (China
Ponnaganti). Women's winners from 5.0 to 3.0 in-
cluded OC Los Cab (Tracy Harris), Braemar (Melissa
Teller), Chow Fun-Aye (Josephine Chow), Party at the
Net (Nancy Bruyninx) and MCC (David Bier).
"The event went well," said Ali Ordonez, the USTA's
Southern California Sectional League Coordinator.
"Players look forward to playing in the biggest league
we have and qualifying to make it to Sectionals."

S
ome of the top young men's
tennis players from across the
globe will gather at Los Cab from
September 21-30 to compete in
the 18th annual Los Cab USTA
Men's Pro Futures tournament.
"This is an opportunity for Los
Cab members to see professional
tennis up-close," said Hank Lloyd,
the event's organizer.
Mackenzie McDonald, who ad-
vanced to the round of 16 this year
at Wimbledon, has played the
event in the past, as have Ameri-
can pros such as Steve Johnson,
Sam Quarry, Taylor Fritz, Brian
Baker and many of the top colle-
giate players in the country.
Qualifying begins September
21, with 128 singles players vying
for eight spots into the main draw.
The 32-team singles tournament
and the 16-team doubles tourna-
ment (for which there is no quali-
fier) run September 25-30. The
boys' 18 singles and doubles win-
ners of this month's Los Cab Junior
Open will receive wild-card bids
into the tournament.
Players ages 16-30 will come
from all over the world to com-
pete, and Lloyd said some will be
in need of housing. Three Los Cab
members provided housing last
year, and Lloyd is hoping more will
open their homes this September.
